You just bought a new RV and now you want to go camping right? If you did, you may be wondering how you should prepare for your first outdoor camping adventure. This article will give you some tips to get started. These tips may sound a bit simplistic, but many people forget some of these things on their first trip.

One of the first things that you should do to prepare your Travel Trailer for a great camping adventure is making sure that your coach is serviced and up-to-par. If you just recently bought a new unit, you may not need to have it serviced yet. On the other hand, if your trailer hasn’t been used in a while or if you bought it used, you may want to think about having a professional RV technician inspect your coach for you. There is nothing worse than being stranded with a broken down camper.

Since you will be taking your camper with you, you will likely be sleeping in your trailer. For that reason, you will want to make sure that your Travel Trailer is filled with clean bedding. You need to pack more than just sleeping bags. Travel Trailer beds are designed to use traditional sheets and bedding. Making sure that your RV is stocked full of clean bedding will help to ensure that your night are peaceful and comfortable.

You will also want to make sure that the kitchen is filled with all of the needed supplies. Make sure that you pack enough food for your camping adventure. You may want to bring extra food along with you, in case you make any new friends. In addition to making sure that you pack enough food, snacks, and drinks, you will also want to make sure that you bring eating utensils with you. Whether you use paper, plastic, or your home dinnerware, make sure that you have pots and pans to cook in, as well as items to eat with.

It is also important that your Travel Trailer has enough toilet paper, even if you are planning on just an overnight trip. You will want to make sure that you have other needed things like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, and your toothbrush. It is also important that bring along an appropriate number of towels and wash clothes. If the camping site that you are visiting does not have an onsite laundry facility, you may want to bring at least one towel for each day of your camping trip.

The above are just a few tip to prepare for your outdoor camping adventure. To ensure that you bring along everything with you that you need, make yourself a camping checklist. By making checklist, ahead of time, you will make sure that you bring along everything that you want and need to bring. Packing your Travel Trailer in advance of your trip will make it easier for you to ensure that everything is good to go on the day of you leave on your camping trip.

Camping with your family is the most fun you can have for the least expense. So as the slogan says, “Go Rving” in a Travel Trailer and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Camping in California just goes with surfing. How else could most surfers afford a weekend in Big Sur? I know I can’t afford a spa. I’ve camped many times in places where I could surf. Though there weren’t always waves, there was always a fire and some hot dogs.

Like with any planned vacation, it can be tough coordinating a swell with reserving a spot. When I finally know some decent surf is on the way, many sites are already booked. Despite this, windows of opportunity pop up and we’ve gotten a campsite even after being informed by the computer/telephone/Internet/ signs that the place was full. It’s often worth the risk to go for it and hope something’s available. Just be sure to have a backup plan, such as another campground nearby that will almost surely have spots. As of yet, we haven’t had to pay for one of those pricey hotel rooms in Bodega Bay.

We always try to pack light, as light as one can when lugging kid gear, camping stuff, and, of course, a surfboard. It seems like there’s a lot of room in a vehicle until you start filling it with your crap. We used to have a 1982 VW camper van that we kept pre-packed most of the time. It was good for weekend trips. We’d just pull up and pop the top. It even had a sink, a stove, and a fridge, though we rarely use them, preferring to cook outside. Its main problem was that it was an old and slow Diesel. 1960’s VW love-vans flew past us on Highway 1. We used MANY turnouts. It was great once we got there, but next time I’d get the gas version without the stove and sink inside. It’s faster and has more room. Where to go? The big question always depends on swell, wind, and site availability. Here are some of the places I’ve gone camping and surfing. Most have really nice sites near or right on the beach.

Humboldt County

My wife and I got rained out of our tent in Trinidad, so we got a cheap cabin rental at Emerald Forest campground. It was rustic, with a wooden bed, a chair, and a little heater – perfect for the rainy conditions and simple enough that we still used our gear and felt like we were camping.

Along the drive north to one of the beaches, I noticed some glassy waves breaking about a mile away at a beach that turned out to be Dry Lagoon. Though it was overcast, the waves were glassy, head high, and fun. Guess I caught it on a rare day when it wasn’t blown out.

Del Norte County

My wife and I also went to the somewhat economically depressed Crescent City. It kind of reminds me of my home town of Pacifica, except that houses are four times more expensive at home. But Crescent City has potential, surrounded by ocean and redwoods. I surfed at South Beach in a sideshore wind, and it was kind of fun despite being sloppy.

Sonoma County

Bodega Bay is the main surfing spot in Sonoma county, and Doran beach is its most convenient campground, located right across from the beach. We’ve stayed there many times and it’s hard to beat for convenience. I just stroll across the road to the beach and paddle out. Just make sure it’s high tide and there’s enough swell to make it into this south facing beach. Nearby is Salmon Creek which can be fun when it’s not blown out or big and out of control. If your going with the family, I’d just stick with Doran Beach.

Marin County

We stayed out in Olema campground, about 25 minutes from Drakes beach at Point Reyes. The campground is a grassy meadow with a few trees, and the beach is kind of like Doran Beach – protected, an easy paddle out, and light on sandbars. I surfed it a couple of times almost completely alone on really fun, sunny, fast and somewhat short tides. A couple of other times I made the long drive for nothing. I got pretty close to the estuary at one point and decided to leave due to the shark potential. A northwest wind was strong offshore in front of the parking lot, which is at the end of “wind funnel” valley. You can also drive to Bolinas….Oh I forgot, nobody’s supposed to know where Bolinas is. If you can find it, say, with MapQuest or something, you can surf this place. It’s usually cleaner and more crowded than other spots around. If you want really mellow slow rollers that are good for a longboard, walk out to the beach, hang a right, walk past the smell of burning hemp, and you’re there.

Santa Cruz County

Here we stayed at New Brighton beach. It’s a nice campground with access to all the surf in town. We also stayed at Sunset beach, also very nice with a huge beach. It’s fifty miles across the Monterey bay with several surf spots. I caught it on a couple of windless-to-offshore days. It’s not fun if there’s any wind or too much swell. There’s also an RV park near the beach, but we felt a little silly staying there in our tiny VW camper van next to all the massive motor homes. The lady staying in her Honda Element made us feel more at home.

Monterey County

Here we stayed at a campground in the hills about five miles inland. We drove out to Spanish Bay on an unbelievable day – ten foot waves with perfect shape. It was fun until the grizzled, burly, longboard crew showed up. They pretty much dominated after that, and I broke a leash. I also had great surf in Carmel beach. This place looks like Hawaii, just with cold water. Pearl white sand covers both Spanish Bay and Carmel Beach.

I have also had some fun days at Andrew Molera. The walk to the rivermouth is about a mile! A couple of times it was about 4 foot and clean and peeled pretty well – all rights. A few other times I dragged the wife and kids out to the windy spot and we watched tiny waves breaking for a few minutes before making the LONG walk back. I wouldn’t make the walk out unless you know there’s a southwest swell or decent sized west to northwest swell.

A good place to stay is Ventana campground with its beautiful sites in the redwood forest. But there are several options nearby. If you stay farther south at Plaskett Creek you can surf Sand Dollar beach across the street and a bit of a walk down the bluff. It has beautiful water, but the small, rocky shore isn’t much fun for the family. Some young women next to our campground asked if we were there to collect Jade. I guess that’s something else you can do there if you’re into that sort of thing. Willow Creek is another good spot nearby. It had some really nice waves that were well overhead when we were there.

San Luis Obispo County

Morro Strand State Beach is a campground on the beach near Morro rock. I woke up to low tide close-outs when we visited, but I found some surf near Montana De Oro state park. I don’t know exactly where I entered the path to the beach from the road. I just pulled over when I saw the surfboard racks on cars. Ten minutes through the trees and voila – surf!

So you’re going camping! Choosing a tent that fits your style, needs, and locations can be a fun task. Make sure you’re not overwhelmed by bells, whistles, and deals. While those can all be great—you really need to concentrate on a few key points to ensure your home away from home will be everything you want and everything you need—even comfort!

Over the River and Through the . . . ?

No, that isn’t how the song goes, but you really need to consider where you’re going—the climate, the length of your trip, the seasons you plan on using the tent. For instance, would you use the same tent in Florida as you would in Canada? Depending on the time of year this may be true, but if you’re looking for shelter from a snow dusting you’re hardly going to pick the same tent you would pick for a humid Florida summer. Make sure your tent provides shelter from the elements and is made from a fire-retardant material—think of all the heaters or fire you may need to start if the evening gets cool. If you’re looking for a one-size fits all tent then you need to go camping in the summer. Otherwise, take these pointers and let the research begin!

How Much Do You Want to Work?

So you’re either camping on a mission or camping for leisure, right? Either way, when choosing a tent for camping you need to decide how much work you would like to do to set up the campsite. Depending on the size of the tent (base this on how many people will be sleeping inside your tent), you’re able to get tents that are so small they’re built in to a backpack! These are obviously smaller tents used for 1 or 2 people. The next type of tent is attached to the ground with ropes and pegs—these take more work, and are easier with two people helping (although one person is more than fully capable). Next, you have your pop-up tent, which does just that—it pops up with a few simple steps (follow the directions). So depending on the amount of labor you’re interested, the number of folks you’re taking camping, and how much room you have to haul the necessities—you’re able to determine what your home away from home will look like.

That Was Easy!

So now you have all of the key components for picking a tent! You’ll guide yourself through the process by answering all of the questions you’ve read here. This way, you can be answering more questions and delegating tasks like “who is finding the firewood?”

1st Gear

So you’re going camping. How exciting, are you strapping on your hiking boots and a backpack tent, or are you in flip-flops and shorts? Having the essential camping gear can make or break your camping experience faster than you can say “pop-up tent!”

Sweet Dreams!

When shopping for outdoor camping equipment you need to keep one thing in mind—comfort. What will make your life easier while you’re lying under the stars? You’re going to need a tent that can forgo the unforeseen such as a large storm, a camp fire out of control or those pesky mosquitoes!

Love a Bargain!

Just like many other things, retail has created a season for camping—most of their supplies are out and ready for sale in the summertime. Have you ever tried to venture to the camping aisle in fall or winter? Try it out, you may find one of the best bargains of your shopping life! Next, go online—you’re able to find the most affordable essentials without leaving home!

Quality Counts

Quality camping gear is detrimental to your camping success. If you’re going to pay less for something make sure it’s because you found a great bargain. You don’t want to scrimp on the things that you need in nature. When you shop for camping you’re making an investment—you don’t close your eyes and point to a random car on the page before you buy, do you? Didn’t think so! The price tag on some items may seem hefty, but think about the advantages and take care of your investment.

Custom Orders

That’s right! Your outdoor camping equipment is custom to you—don’t pick supplies that are irrelevant to you, or just because you found a great deal. Although those things are nice, you’ll regret it when you’re sitting on a riverbank with some doodling equipment—when all you needed was a rod and a reel. Finally, never forget that outdoor equipment is an investment—take care of it and it will take care of you.

Camping – a favorite family past time and the vacation of choice for people of all ages – has its share of dangers. Aside from hazardous weather conditions and sometimes treacherous surrounding terrain, fuel-powered camping equipment can be potentially dangerous to your health, even fatal at times, when campers are victims of carbon monoxide poisoning.

What Is Carbon Monoxide Poisoning?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is emitted when fuel such as natural gas and propane is burned. It is odorless and colorless, virtually impossible to detect. When an excess of CO is inhaled, a person can suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning, a predicament that can quickly lead to death. See more on carbon monoxide poinsoning.

CO actually reduces the blood stream’s ability to hold oxygen. Low levels of oxygen in the body can make you faint and cause the system to stop functioning properly. In serious cases of carbon monoxide poisoning, the body can shut down completely.

Camping usually involves a tent, camper or RV. When combustibles are used within these enclosed quarters, without proper ventilation, people in close proximity are at high risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Lanterns, space heaters, portable grills, gas burning appliances, and other fuel-powered equipment should only be lit and burnt outside.

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Because the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning resemble those of the common cold or flu, they are often initially ignored. Immediate attention should be paid to someone who has been exposed to CO emission and displays the following signs and/or complaints:

headaches

dizziness

weakness or excessive sleepiness

nausea and/or vomiting

general confusion

Treatment
The key is to respond quickly. Turn off the appliance and open doors and windows in order to ventilate the area thoroughly. Transport the victim immediately to a clinic, hospital, or medical doctor, if you suspect that any of the above mentioned symptoms may be due to an exposure to carbon monoxide. Certain individuals are at a higher risk than others.

Who Is at Risk?
Carbon monoxide does not affect all people in the same way. Some age groups are more vulnerable, and individuals with certain conditions can be at higher risk than others.

Children and the elderly, as well as pregnant women, smokers and those with lung problems, and individuals suffering from anemia and other circulatory system problems are at high risk when exposed to CO. In such cases, a faster response to CO inhalation is likely to occur, and a smaller amount of CO will be sufficient to induce poisoning.

There are other important factors to keep in mind. When you are camping at high altitudes, the effects of carbon monoxide are heightened and consequently, more care is required. Also, when alcohol or drugs are ingested, the negative effects of CO inhalation are intensified.
Anyone in a high risk category should be made aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, and well-informed on the ways of handling the situation if it occurs.

How to Avoid or Reduce the Risk
Adequate ventilation in your tent, camper, RV, and any other enclosed areas is important. When using gas burning units such as the portable stove in your RV, or gas lanterns in your tent, make a conscious effort to keep the door or windows open.

Camping in cold weather is especially dangerous for carbon monoxide poisoning because there is a frequent need for heating units and a strong tendency to stay inside due to the weather. Choosing other alternatives like electrical or battery-operated models is highly recommended.

There is pressure for manufacturers of fuel-powered camping equipment to be more proactive with regard to the potential health hazards of their products. Some are working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to design models that produce less carbon monoxide, and for all units to distinctly display warning labels and consumer information.

However, the best defense against the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is to educate the public on responsible use. Helping individuals to recognize the symptoms and know how to react can save many lives.

Enjoy your camping trip by being aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. Limit the risk in order to ensure that your family and friends are safe.

Nothing beats feeling the open air as you rest outside your tent and enjoying a warm food after hiking all day. The essence of camping is to go trace back our roots and be one with nature and it does not really matter if you are camping in the woods, in a luxurious campsite or in the hills.

One of the nice things about camping is being able to cook in the open regardless if it is through a camping stove or barbecue. However, one of the camping problems is how to preserve the warmth of the food. When camping, you cannot place the food in the microwave and reheat it. When you are outside, you need to eat your food in one sitting or you have to it eat cold. However, there are some techniques on how you can keep your food hot.

One way to keep the food hot is to insulate it with newspaper and cloth. You have to place your pan of hot food on a newspaper or you can cover it with a tea towel. It can keep the food hot for another twenty minutes.

Adding sauce with your food is another wise way to keep it hot. Boiled vegetables can get cold easily. Instead of boiling your veggies, what you can do is to serve them as hot sauce. Apart from giving them more flavor, they can also stay hot longer.

Your cool box is not just a cool box for you can also use it as hot box. To turn your cool box into a hot box, you must fill it with hot air from the boiling water in the kettle and then place your pan inside. Seal the box tightly to prevent the air from escaping. This can help keeping your food hot for hours.

Flasks are also a great way to keep your sauce warm while you cook other ingredients and food. All you have to do is to pour the hot sauce inside the flask and seal it.

Another way to ensure that everybody gets to eat a warm meal is to ascertain that everyone is gathered before serving the food. Through this, everyone can receive his share of hot meal.

It is really a challenge on how you can keep your food hot especially when camping out of the season. If you have barbecue in your menu and it wasn’t consumed totally, you can wrap them in foil and keep them inside your larder. This way it will stay warmer longer. These are the simple ways on how you can keep your food warm while camping.

If you are planning to take a break from the fast lifestyle of the city but somehow you do not prefer simply staying at the countryside, then you might as well consider camping. Camping exposes you and allows you to get close to nature. When you go camping in the woods, on a luxurious campsite or on the hill, you get to appreciate nature and breathe fresh air.

If you want to try camping but you only have little experience about the activity, the best thing to do to make up for the lack of experience is to plan the trip carefully. When you prepare for the trip you need to check that you have the right things, you pick the right camp area, consider how to prepare the food and what kind of shelter you will have out there. This is the reason why camping check list is necessary.

Picking the best area to camp can be difficult. You need to consider what kind of camp you want to try. You also need to consider your knowledge regarding various terrains, the environment and crafting the bush skills. Where you are heading is also important as well as the things you can do there, the safety of the stay and the travel. The weather must also be appropriate for your camping trip.

The food you’ll take with you also depends on the accommodation you will be having and the area of your camp. Your meal should be planned well before you have set out for the trip to prevent unpleasant events. It is best that you bring canned and processed foods with you so you don’t have to worry about how to cook them, that they’ll spoil or they’ll drip. If you wish to have cold drinks in the camp then you can carry a freezer box where you can place your drinks and meat for barbecue.

Before going out to camp, make sure that you have already included in your checklist all the things you will need like shelter, sleeping items, things for outdoor survival such as flashlight, rope, fuel, matches, compass or GPS. Also make sure that you have brought a good storage for your clothes and that you have entertainment stuff such as camera and binoculars.

If you prepare for your trip, you can be sure that nothing can go terribly wrong. You will surely return home with a smiling face and lots of memories.

Recession… and all of a sudden you can no longer afford additional activities for your children. Trips to your favourite restaurant are not an option, you fear birthdays and holidays, not to mention Christmas. You seem to be spending money on food and petrol…and the bills, of course.

There is nothing left after the taxes to put aside for a rainy day… And you still want this bit of luxury. You want to be able to sit and relax while listening to the waves splashing a few metres away from you. Not being able any more to afford a hotel break, you become more and more jealous of people who boast about their exotic trips. You clench your teeth and say nothing, but inside something is shouting: “I want to go on holidays as well!” Are you worse than anybody else? Don’t you deserve a bit of a treat now and again?

Since I was a child I have been spending my holidays kayaking and camping with my family. As money was tight, we had to opt for an inexpensive way of spending our vacation, especially that summer holidays in Poland lasted over two months and people had to organize care for their children during this long time. So my parents, especially my dad, who is very good at organising outdoor activities, decided to go for a holiday where we would sleep in a tent and cook our own meals. As my parent used to be teachers (teachers in Poland have never been paid well), they had enough time to go for a long relaxation, and kayaking was the cheapest option.

During long winter months we would look through our equipment, mend any holes in the tent roof and check our mattresses. At that time we didn’t know anything about carimats, so we had to rely on old fashioned mattresses that we used to pump up using a foot pump or our lungs. We would look through the kayaking guides setting out the route and our camping places. Mum would prepare meat in advance and preserve it in jars, as meat was especially very difficult to obtain. As soon as the school would finish, within a week we would be travelling by train for a long holiday. By putting up with primitive conditions we were able to spend six weeks in national parks, in peaceful surroundings, close to nature.

I wanted my children to be brought up living close to nature and being able to survive for a few weeks without modern technology. I was hoping one day we would all go camping and kayaking as a family. Unfortunately I had to dismiss my dream as I became disabled due to my illness. I am no longer able to put a tent up and carry on with normal day to day activities without fatigue. What’s more I need to have access to electricity constantly as I need to store my medicine in the fridge. I thought my holidays will be reduced to holidays and organised trips for disabled people. Then we purchased our first motorhome and I regained my hope.

As our 2009 model motorhome has six seatbelts, we are able to go on holiday as a family and we can still take grandparents or friends with us. We are able to pack all the bed lining and put even seven of us to sleep in very comfortable conditions. Cooking is not a problem and does not have to be expensive- the motorhome is equipped with a fridge and freezer making it easy to store food and refill it whenever need arises. If I feel tired, any family member can take on the task of cooking on the easy-to-use gas cooker. Setting tables up can be left to children as they enjoy helping tremendously while having fun at the same time. We equipped our motorhome with every kitchen utensil needed on vacation and not forgetting of course about the barbeque, so we can spend long summer holidays close to nature and far away from crowds. As we have connection to the electricity, apart from the fridge, we can watch TV or films on the DVD player, so no boredom if it rains.

We also pack board games and plenty of books, that can be comfortably read thanks to lights installed over two tables and bunk beds.

Washing is an easy task as the motorhome is equipped with a sink, shower cubicle and a swivel toilet, low enough to be used by small children and convenient for anybody with motability problems.

I may no longer be able to sleep in a tent (as I won’t be able to get up), but I can still spend great holdays travelling in the luxury motorhome and I can feel like a proper member of the gang.

In the UK, there are a number of caravan sites where it is able to purchase a static caravan either new or second hand. It is also becoming popular for these caravan sites to also offer lodges for sale.

North Devon especially has a host of high quality caravan sites due to the nature of its countryside. North Devon is an all year round destination for a wide spectrum of tourists from families, groups of friends through to retired couples.

Static caravans are a good choice for combing the freedom of self catering whilst being in the heart of the area you are staying in. They provide a cheaper alternative to a cottage rental and the caravan sites often have a convenience shop and a bar. There are many caravan sites in Devon and this area attracts a lot of tourists for its good weather, long white sandy beaches and an excellent range of activities. Alternatively, many of the Devon caravan sites offer touring caravans for sale.

The astonishing natural beauty of North Devon combines the superb coastline with the distinctive countryside and which has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This status means the area is nationally protected for the beauty of its landscape. It is made up of several distinct landscape types, each with its own special habitats and geology, including the most vulnerable and beautiful parts of the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve centred around the village of Braunton and its estuary.

Neat patchwork quilts of fertile farmland, wild rugged moorland and wide open spaces all combine to make this corner of England so unique. It’s difficult to imagine any part of Britain more awe-inspiring than the rugged wilds of nearby Exmoor. Covering an area of 250 square miles, this National Park is every rambler’s idea of heaven, where red deer and wild ponies stalk the steep valleys and gorges while buzzards and falcons soar overhead. Popular with a broad clientele, this stretch of coast was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural beauty in 1959 and spans from Marsland Mouth on the Cornish border to Combe Martin and the edge of the Exmoor National Park.

The highly popular beaches of Woolacombe, Saunton and Croyde bring a different clientele to North Devon. Surfing at these beaches is renowned amongst the surfing community. All three with a Blue Flag rating with a combined 10 kilometres of golden, sandy beach between. The rides at Croyde tend to be quite short so this beach is popular with shortboarders. The longer beaches of Woolacoombe and Saunton are less busy and provide longer rides.

It is easy to understand why so many people who stay on Devon caravan sites are tempted to purchase Devon holiday homes. Blue flag beaches are plentiful making the North Devon coast hugely popular with families. Devon lodges mostly range from two bedroom to three bedroom properties. The three bedrooms properties are ideally suited to families. Lodges are a permanent fixture so phone lines can be installed and Sky television both highly benefit for families and they really feel like a home from home.

Choosing to purchase Devon holiday homes or staying on Devon caravan sites makes every holidays a great experience.
